Life story
"Patricia Ann Rohm, 68, died Tuesday, August 28, 2018 after a battle with several serious diseases.
She was born on December 13, 1949 to the late Willard and Sally Anne Mahanes in Charlottesville, VA. Pat graduated from Lane High School in 1967 and lived most of her life in Charlottesville.
She will be deeply missed by her brother, Stephen Mahanes and his wife, Judy of Sterling, VA; her friend of over 40 years, Bob Swain, of Richmond, VA; her son, Charles (Chip) Estes, Jr. of Decatur, Alabama; four grandchildren; and numerous friends and coworkers from the University of Virginia Medical Center, where she worked for over 45 years.
Professionally, Pat worked as Health Unit Coordinator on the old Surgical floor of the hospital. From there she was recruited in 1988 to assist the newly hired Administrative Coordinator in the creation of a Neurological Intensive Care Unit, which evolved into the Nerancy Neuro Intensive Care Unit of today. For this assistance, she was awarded an Employee of the Year recognition for her organizational effort in the foundation of the new ICU.
Pat was instrumental in establishing a branch of the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators at UVA Medical Center. This organization was created to both generate professional achievement in a national certification of tested members and encourage professional pride in the vital work they provide. She served in the national leadership of the NAHUC organization and spoke at national conferences.
Later in her career, Pat worked in both outpatient Dermatology and in the Morgue. She delighted in learning the details of each environment in which she worked.
Pat was an artist in many mediums: from painting to needlework, to gourmet cooking and jewelry making. She loved most of all to travel with her friend Bob, throughout the US, the Caribbean, Mexico, and to her favorite haunts on the Outer Banks.
Pat will be remembered as a lively and creative person in almost every aspect of her life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 11:30 am at the DoubleTree Charlottesville, 990 Hilton Heights Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
