Michael Alan Murphy, 61, departed his temporal life on Saturday, January 25, 2020, after a long battle with cancer.
Michael was born on March 23, 1958 in Evanston, IL to Robert W. Murphy, Master Gunnery Sergeant, USMC and Alma I. Murphy. Michael grew up as a military brat living in several places in the United States, among them were his favorites Cherry Point, NC and Albany, GA. Michael became friends with many people along the way and kept in touch with his closet friends through Facebook. After his Dad's last transfer and retirement he spent his high school years, attending and graduating from Garfield Senior High School in Dale City, VA, until his marriage to his wife, Cynthia Swann Murphy in 1979, and resided in Alexandria, VA for several years. In 1992 he settled in Fredericksburg, VA with his wife, Cynthia Murphy until his passing.
Michael completed computer programming school in 1981 and began his career as a computer operator on Capitol Hill and eventually as a senior programmer with the House Information Systems. In 1990 he became Office and Systems Manager for the Honorable Bill Heffner, North Carolina until Mr. Heffner's retirement in 1999. Michael then began his career as a licensed realtor until 2012 when he began a Bachelor of Science Degree with Bluefield College, graduating with honors in December of 2015. In 2016 he was accepted into and began a Master's program with William and Mary until his cancer diagnosis in 2017.
Michael was a kind and spiritual man who loved his family and friends and service to others was a high priority in his life. He was baptized in 1992 and became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Mike served numerous callings in the LDS Church including Ward Clerk for several years. He was an avid fisherman and loved to organize annual fishing trips for family and friends. He was also a life-long football fan and loved the Dallas Cowboys!
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Alma Murphy. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Swann Murphy, and his son Reid Cameron Murphy; his brother, Jeffery A. Murphy (Jennifer) of Alexandria, VA; sisters-in-law, Natalie Allen (Edward) of Harleysville, PA; Jocelyn Tyree (Charles), of Lutherville, MD; nephews: Edward Allen, (III) (Delia), Michael Murphy, Harrison Murphy, John Murphy, William Murphy and Robert Murphy; niece, Melissa Meraz; great nephews: Benjamin Murphy, Antonio Gomez and Marco Rodriguez; Aunt Elnora Rose and a host of cousins, extended family and cherished friends.
Michael will be forever remembered for his love of family and his selflessness.
