Life story
" Nancy Jean DeMary Chrislip, beloved daughter, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family on Wednesday, November 18th at her residence in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was 90.
Born March 25, 1930 to the late Sam and Lucy (née Gabriel) DeMary of Enterprise, West Virginia, she was a 1948 graduate of Shinnston High School.
Nancy spent her adult life working in medicine as a Medical Technologist after receiving her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Fairmont State University.
During the 1950’s Nancy both worked and taught Medical Technology at St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Clarksburg, West Virginia. In 1961 she married the late Allen R. Chrislip, Jr. from Shinnston, West Virginia and the two moved to Newton, North Carolina where Allen worked in the school systems, while Nancy worked for many years in the laboratory at Catawba Memorial Hospital, and later in the Newton and Maiden clinics for Dr Lawrence Caldwell, Sr and Jr.
During her life in Newton, North Carolina Nancy was continually active in civic programs, serving multiple terms as President of the Pilot Club of Newton. She was also an active member of St Aloysius Catholic Church of Hickory, North Carolina and a founding parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Newton, North Carolina.
After retiring in the early 1990’s Nancy continued to volunteer in the Catawba Memorial Gift Shop with the Hospital Auxiliary, while also taking many occasions to tour the world, visiting her son Christopher and his family while he served in the US Navy.
In 2019 Nancy relocated to Fredericksburg, Virginia to be closer to her son and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents Sam and Lucy, her brother, Richard Lee (Dick) DeMary, her sister Mary Edith DeMary, her ex-husband Allen R. Chrislip, Jr., and her sister-in-law, Mary Rose (Moscar) DeMary.
She is survived by her son Christopher Chrislip and his wife Jennifer (Muir) of Fredericksburg, Virginia; her niece, Toni R. (DeMary) McMillion and her husband Mark of Clarksburg, WV; nephew Samuel R. DeMary and his wife, Beckie (Ewing) DeMary of Salisbury, North Carolina; her grandchildren Wyatt and Benjamin Chrislip of Fredericksburg, Virginia; her great-nieces and great-nephews are: Isabella, Sophia, Stephen, and James McMillion of Clarksburg; and Gianluca DeMary of Salisbury, North Carolina.
