Life story

" Helen Roy Bowen, born on April 14, 1936, daughter to Adam Jesse Roy and Maxie Alva Hudson. She was raised in New Orleans and later moved to Virginia where she was a resident of the state for 51 years. She passed away on January 22, 2021, age 84, after long term suffering of Alzheimer’s.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Capt. Robert L. Bowen, USMC (Ret); her brother Mack Roy and great granddaughter Payton Hodges.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda DeGrasse; sons, Ralph DeGrasse, Jr. and Brian Seeling; grandchildren; Stephanie Reigelsperger, Brenda Reigelsperger, Brian Seeling, Jr., David Seeling, Amber Hodges, Joy Embrey, Jason DeGrasse, Chrissy Graff and Robert DeGrasse; 18 great grandchildren; step children Jack, Bob, Alan, Brian Bowen and Donna Roy; brothers George Roy and Robert Blanchard; sisters Marilyn Necaise, Marian Haydel, Rosie Cantrell and Cherren Cortes.

Before retiring in 1995, she worked for the US Government in Washington DC as the Chief of the Payroll Division for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

She had a love for shopping, reading, gardening and antiquing. In her earlier life she also volunteered and participated in community service for several Veteran’s organizations.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends, but leaves behind so many cherished memories.

She will be laid to rest at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle VA

I am devastated by the loss of my mother even though I knew her time was limited. She was diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer's in mid 2013. It was extremely hard to watch her mental and physical decline. The disease is brutal. She loved to shop and buy things on sale. She loved gardening and had a love for flowers particularly roses. She loved antiques and going antiquing on weekends. She loved to read. She was smart and outspoken. She also volunteered with numerous veteran's organization in support of her husband. She was laid to rest at Quantico on March 22, 2021 with her husband Robert L Bowen who passed on 11-25-2020. I will miss her everyday.
