" Obituary for Joseph Phillip Gibbs, Jr.

Joseph Phillip Gibbs, Jr., (Phil), 68, passed away at his home in Stafford, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. Phil was born on March 22, 1954, at Arlington Hospital in Arlington, Virginia to parents Joseph Phillip Gibbs, Sr., (Joe), originally of Orange, and Margaret Parker Gibbs, originally of Spotsylvania.

Phil attended Stafford County, Virginia schools, graduating in 1973 from Stafford High School. Following graduation, he apprenticed under General Contractor, William Stallings, (deceased). Eventually earning his own General Contractor’s license, Phil practiced his trade in Stafford and surrounding counties for over 45 years, retiring in 2020.

Phil was an avid hunter and member of the Spotsylvania Hunt Club on Bear Island. He also enjoyed skiing, boating, fishing, canoeing, and softball. He was a member of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, played a mean shortstop for their Men’s Softball Team, and was instrumental in the construction of the children’s playground at the church. He served as a volunteer and board member of the Church Shelter Board for the Rappahannock Area, Ltd. (now called Brisben Center) and often provided employment to shelter residents.

Phil will be remembered as a generous man, always offering his time to help anyone in need including family, friends, and neighbors in his community. Many will recall his usual telephone greeting, “Joe’s Pool Room, 8-Ball Speaking” or “Hey, what’s shakin’?” He was a huge fan of the “Redskins” (would not call them the Commanders) and a connoisseur of 7-11 coffee, always his first stop on the way to work.

Phil’s children and grandchildren were his greatest pride and joy. They were an immense comfort and huge support to him in the months before he passed. In addition to his parents, Joseph Phillip Gibbs Sr. and Margaret Parker Gibbs, Phil was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Samuel Claude Parker, and grandmother, Myrtle Franck Parker, and his paternal grandmother, Viola Estes Gibbs. Phil is survived by his son, Joseph Phillip Gibbs III (Phillip) and his wife, Chrissy, his daughter, Karen Michelle Turcios and her husband, Jose; grandchildren Chloe Gibbs, Hunter Gibbs, Brooklynn Gibbs, Christopher Turcios, Trevyn Turcios, Jayden Turcios, and Aurora Turcios; sisters, Tina Gibbs Dodd and her husband, Jon, Janet Gibbs Kirby and her husband, John; two nieces and three nephews; and a great-niece and a great-nephew who will all miss him dearly.

A service of remembrance will be held at Found and Sons Funeral Home, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, VA on January 26, 2023. The family invites all who wish to pay tribute and remember Phil to join them at 1:00 pm for family visitation and 2:00 pm for the service of remembrance.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift in Phil’s name to Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, 308 Hanover St., Fredericksburg, VA 22401. "
